When you think of the West Indies, what images spring to mind? Cricket, Bob Marley, endless beaches with swaying palm trees and fantastic sunsets. Yes you got it right! That’s the Caribbean Dream.
Other images I think about are Red Stripe beer, Jerk chicken, cocktails in the hot tub and massages on the naturist beach at Hedo. You can see where my priorities lie.
From arriving at the Sangster International airport in Montego Bay on the beautiful island of Jamaica the first thing you notice when the aircraft doors open is that sudden blast of warm air, the next is the gorgeous smell of the spices that fill the tropical air. Then you notice the laid back attitude of everyone around, no rushing about, things go slower in the Caribbean. Don’t worry be Happy!
Depending on which resort you have booked into the journey times vary. If you are going to the Grand Lido Negril or Hedonism II the new road makes the journey time just over one hour. You can fly in a light aircraft bookable at the airport with Air Jamaica Express or some other companies such as Timair to several areas in Jamaica.
When you arrive in Negril you would probably have booked into either Hedo II or the Grand Lido Negril, both naturist resorts come with naturist beaches, naturist pools, hot tubs, excellent accommodation and entertainment. You can walk across the road from one resort to the other. If you are staying at the 5 star Grand Lido Negril you can purchase a pass to the visit Hedo. Both naturist holiday resorts will offer you a warm welcome.
Hedonism II is situated at the end of the seven-mile long Negril beach and is the favoured area for watching the glorious sunsets. You can join a naturist catamaran cruise down to Rick’s Café to see the cliff diving and catch the sunset upon your return.
The Hedonism resorts are two sides Nude & Prude with an imaginary line about half way down the beach with a sign saying No Photographs on nude beach. This rule is strongly enforced by the powerful lady security guards. Not so strict is the nude/prude divide with the entertainment staff usually gathering a posse of naturist clients to gate crash the prude side by way of the waterslide that winds its way into the prudies pool. The past two years have seen many improvements to Hedo II with updated rooms including new showers, TV’s and private Jacuzzis on some of the naturist suites.
New jungle walkways and areas give panoramic views over the small pools and garden areas on the prude side.
The Toga and Pyjama parties compliment the excellent entertainment, where less is best. There is a saying “ No sheet No Eat!” Every week there tends to be a different theme with groups bringing their own atmosphere to the resort. Examples are the Miss No Swim Suit competition or the Ultimate Man of Hedo.
Bubbly Bares put on a Mardi Gras type of week complete with masks and beads.
Across the road at Grand Lido Negril the atmosphere is definitely more upmarket and a little less raunchy. I always remember the first time I crossed the road to enter Negril, the commissionaire said “So you escaped from the Zoo”. It’s good to have a second week to get over the partying at Hedo.
When you first arrive at the Grand Lido Negril now rebranded as Breezes Negril you can see why it is promoted as “One of the most luxurious resorts ever created.”
There are three superb restaurants. 24-hour room service. Satellite TV and CD players in every suite and junior suite. Unlimited champagne and premium brand cocktails.
For the ladies the Spa facilities are excellent with a most impressive list of treatments all included.
The resort has been voted by Conde Naste Traveller “Conde Nast 2005 Gold List for the Best Places to stay in the Atlantic and Caribbean”
Also has also been voted “Best Beach in the Caribbean and 6th Best Beach in the World” by the Travel Channel
For me the resort is very good only let down by the small pool on the naturist side, Grand Lido Braco has by far the best pool anywhere. It is great to sit in the hot tub at night on the naturist beach by the pool just listening to the sounds of the birds and other creatures.
Grand Lido Braco is my favourite Lido resort this also has now been rebranded as Breezes Rio Buenos. Designed on Falmouth town centre, which is in the county of Trelawny just like in the UK.
This area is where you will find Hedonism III and also the Breezes Golf & Beach resort again with naturist facilities. If Golf is your desire why not try out the PGA course.
From these three excellent resorts you are spoiled for choice for things to see and do.
Dunn’s River Falls are probably the most visited attraction. Here you can climb the 600 foot falls from the beach made famous by James Bond where he saw Ursula Undress coming out of the sea in that famous bikini in one of the Bond films.
Other attractions are Fern Gulley a 3-mile road built in an old riverbed that winds through a lush garden of ferns. Calypso Rafting is a 45-minute ride the white river or why not visit the home of Noel Coward “Firefly” named after the luminous fireflies seen after dark.
The lively resort of Ochos Rios does not as the name suggests have eight rivers is close by and is the place where the Jamaicans say “ Heaven spill into the sea”
West of Ochos Rios is Nine miles where the legendary Bob Marley was born.
If you have never been to Jamaica you have missed a most beautiful experience. Try it once and you will return time after time.
